The moth to the flame

The Moth to the flame, we have all seen it haven't we? The moth ever drawn to the light that the flame brings. The heat, the shake of luminesance that it gives off. The shadows playing behind it. To the Moth the flame is beautiful, to the moth the flame means its destruction.

Many a child after witnessing such an event and being fascinated with it has always asked why the insect would do such a thing? Doesn't it know that it will be destoyed by the element it has so deeply desired to be one with. What can we say to that? Give them some scientific answer about how the light in the darkness has attracted the moth?

I often wonder myself why so many people do the same thing. I wonder what is in their heads that attacts some people to the wrong types of things, the wrong types of people. Sometimes I can discount what they do. Reaching into my past christian roots I think of the last words that Christ spoke while upon the cross 'Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." However even in ignorance it has not saved them or given them less of the final punishment. The ones that knowingly pursue the flame I can only think of as mad in that surely they must know what is in store for them as soon as they reach that fiery destination.

I think back to the moth and there is no dissuading it however that it will be in any danger. It is drawn to the flame and will not be discouraged until you either force it in a way that it can no longer function correctly or you kill it yourself.

My only hope is that we as people have more sense than the moths that we see. That we as people can see the dangers before we run into them or correct our course in which we travel. That we can take heed from those that warn us of the perils that are in store for us.

But if not, well at least it will be a beautiful ending as the flame consumes its victim in its uncaring and unloving embrace of which will be the victims last look upon that event in life.
